Events added; remember Cyber Chip homework

New information has been added to the on-line Calendar listing dates for Trystan B.’s three Eagle Scout Project workdays in March and the Philmont Prep Hike in February. More details will be announced as they become available.

Also, remember to complete your individual Cyber Chip Contract and sign the Scout Law and Cybersafety handout given out during Monday’s meeting. Part 2 of the class is scheduled for Monday, February 27. Lost your forms? Get them in the Resources section.

Celebrating Scout Sunday

esb-19-group-webTroop 170 and Pack 134, both chartered to East Somerset Baptist Church, celebrated Scout Sunday with the congregation on February 5.

The Scouts presented the American Flag, led the Pledge, Scout Oath and Scout Law. Cubmaster David Mullins and Scoutmaster Dale Morton provided brief updates and thanked the church.

A Scouting For Food collection will take place on February 12.

MB Fair class signups Feb. 6

meritbadgesashThe troop will sign up Scouts planning to participate in the Lake Cumberland District Merit Badge Fair during our regular meeting on Monday, February 6.

Pre-registration is strongly encouraged as some classes have limited participation and we want to have enough food for everyone.

The Merit Badge Fair will be held Saturday, February 18, from 8:30 am to 4 pm, at East Somerset Baptist Church. There is $10 fee and that includes lunch. Attending Scouts should be in full Class A uniform.

Merit Badges offered: Citizenship in the Nation* (1/2 day, morning), Digital Technology (1/2 day, afternoon), Disabilities Awareness (full day), Family Life* (1/2 day, afternoon), First Aid* (full day), Journalism (full day), Law (1.2 day, morning), Public Speaking (1/2 day, afternoon), Safety (1/2 day, morning), and Scouting Heritage (full day).

* Denotes an Eagle-required merit badge

A Scout is Reverent: Scout Sunday

scoutsunday-webTroop 170, along with Pack 134, will celebrate Scout Sunday on February 5 with our chartered partner, East Somerset Baptist Church. The Boy Scouts of America designates the Sunday that falls before February 8 (Scouting’s Anniversary Day) as Scout Sunday, which is the primary date to recognize the contributions of young people and adults to Scouting.

We will gather in the church gym at 10:15 am; services begin at 10:30 am.

We are requesting that ALL SCOUTS AND FAMILY MEMBERS ATTEND, regardless of your denomination, for this special celebration. All Scouts and Adult Leaders should be in full Class A uniform with dress shoes.

There will also be a kickoff for the Scouting For Food collection, to be held on February 12.

Preparing for Philmont

philmontprep-group-webMembers of the Troop 170 contingent preparing for this summer’s 10-day backpacking trek at Philmont High Adventure Base in northeast New Mexico participated in a 9.1-mile practice hike with full packs at Yahoo Falls in McCreary County on Saturday, January 28.  The crew consists of: front row from left, Jeff Bullock, Trystan B. and Joey C.; back row from left, Bree B. ‘May I take your coat?’

Troop 170 was once again pleased to assist the Somerset-Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce by checking coats for those attending their annual awards banquet on Thursday, January 19, 2017. A total of 9 Scouts participated in the service project. Click here to view photos.

Klondike: Going for the Gold

klondike_2017-webThis year’s Lake Cumberland/Mountain Laurel District Klondike Derby took place at the Feltner 4-H Camp in Laurel County January 13-15. There were a total of 91 participants (including 66 youth) from 9 units – Troop 79, Troop 87, Troop 149, Troop 170, Crew 488, Troop 529, Troop 572, Pack 828 and Troop 828.

Despite periods of moderate rain on Friday evening (well, it was Friday the 13th afterall) that left part of the camping area with pockets of standing water, temperatures remained above freezing – perfect sleeping weather or to just sit around enjoying a warm, roaring fire campfire.

Personal Fitness MB class begins

personalfitnessA new Personal Fitness Merit Badge class began today at Total Rehab Center with 13 Scouts. Thanks to Instructor Terry Randall, father of a T-170 Eagle Scout, for continuing to work with our youth on this Eagle-required badge – one that requires at least three months to complete. Remember to keep track of your daily physical fitness exercises!
