COVID-19 meeting update #3

Hopefully everyone in the Troop 170 family is managing to get through these very unusual times. This situation is a perfect example why it is important to “Be Prepared” and why we emphasize certain skills more than others.

Following guidance from Blue Grass Council, here are several updates that relate to Troop 170:

1. Joey’s Eagle Project Workday scheduled for Saturday, March 28 has been canceled.

2. The Troop and PLC meetings scheduled for Monday, March 30 are canceled.

3. The Conservation campout scheduled for Friday-Sunday, April 17-19, has been canceled because Green Forest Works has suspended all spring tree planting events.

4. Summer Camp preparations are continuing. There are some of you for which we still need to get information. Either Mr. Morton or Mr. Smith will be in touch.

5. To continue Scouting Advancement programs, we are encouraging Scouts to work on rank requirements at home with their parents.

Meeting/activity updates

Two more updates as a result of the COVID-19 precautionary measures being implemented statewide:

1. There will be NO Troop meeting on Monday, March 23, because East Somerset Baptist Church is closed to all activities for at least another week.

2. The Photography Merit Badge scheduled to begin on Tuesday, March 24, has been postponed. The first class will now be held on Tuesday, April 28, at 6 pm. This is the date originally scheduled for the follow-up class.

We are taking a day-by-day look at future Troop activities. Watch the Troop Calendar for details.

Troop activities schedule update

To all Troop 170 members:

Earlier today, the Blue Grass Council announced that all council and district events will be postponed March 13 through March 31 because of the COVID-19 virus. “Decisions about unit meetings and activities SHOULD BE MADE BY UNIT LEADERSHIP and chartering organizations based on the unit’s individual circumstances and current CDC and local health department guidelines.”

As many of you may already know, the Pulaski County School System has decided to follow Gov. Andy Beshear’s recommendation to call off in-person classes starting Monday.

I have consulted with our Troop Committee Chair and all three Assistant Scoutmasters. As a result, out of an abundance of caution, Troop 170 WILL NOT have a regular Troop meeting on Monday, March 16, and we are CANCELING the planned backpack overnighter Saturday-Sunday, March 21-22.

However, Joey C’s Eagle Scout Project WILL BE HELD this Saturday, March 14, from Noon to 4 pm at his home, 276 Riffe Creek School Road, Dunnville, KY. Those who feel comfortable to participate are welcome to attend. Joey will be constructing two wooden park benches and refinishing one metal park bench. Please bring a cordless drill (charged) and work gloves. Food will be provided.

A decision on future meetings and activities by the Troop will be made at a later date based upon how things are going. Watch the Troop Calendar and your emails for updates.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

Stay safe and healthy – and wash your hands regularly.

Dale Morton, Scoutmaster

The Hope Lodge, located in Lexington, provides free lodging for cancer patients and caregivers traveling far from home for outpatient medical care related to the patient’s cancer diagnosis.
