Registration for Summer Camp

Instead of a regular Troop meeting tonight, January 31, Scouts will have their first opportunity to register for classes for Summer Camp – to be held at Camp Buck Toms (Great Smoky Mountain Council) in Rockwood, Tennessee, the week of June 19-25, 2022. The Patrol Leader Council meeting scheduled for tonight will not take place. Registration will begin starting at 6:30 pm at East Somerset Baptist Church. Mask wearing is recommended while indoors.

Can you hang up a coat?

If you can hang up a coat and smile, they you have all the tools necessary to assist in tonight’s (Thursday, January 20) Somerset-Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce Coat Check Service Project. Please be in the lobby at The Center for Rural Development at 5 pm. Scouts and leaders should wear Class A uniform along with your Troop neckerchief and dress shoes. Show off your merit badges by also wearing your sash. Scouts will help greet guests to the Chamber’s annual banquet and hang up coats. It will be cold tonight, so expect to stay busy! We should be finished about 6:30 pm.

Spider-man movie time changed

Due to a scheduling conflict, the Popcorn Reward movie start time has been changed. Scouts are asked to arrive at Somerset Cinema 8 (100 Mercury Blvd.) at 5:30 pm this Sunday, January 23, to view a showing of “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” Movie begins at 6 pm. There is no cost for Scouts who met their 2021 popcorn sales goal for this reward. Family members are also welcome to attend, but must purchase their own tickets. Scouts should wear Class A uniform and neckerchief.

Happy New Year!

Despite having to postpone the January 1 hike, it will be a busy 2022. Events for January and February have been added to the Troop Calendar page. Please make note of the scheduled dates for special activities. Remember to check back frequently for any updates. As always, announcements at Troop meetings take priority over published information.

New Merit Badge offered; will be required for Eagle starting July 1, 2022

Citizenship in Society

The first new merit badge for youth in the Scouts BSA program since 2017 officially launches today. Called Citizenship in Society, it provides Scouts with opportunities to learn more about our world by encouraging them to explore information on diversity, equity, inclusion and ethical leadership — and to learn why these qualities are important in society and in Scouting.

RSVP by Sept. 18 for campout/service project

The next Troop Campout will be held September 24-26 and include participation in the Lake Cumberland Cleanup as a conservation service project. Please let Chris Smith know if you will be attending by Saturday, September 18. We will be camping at the Waitsboro Recreation Area here in Pulaski County. Sunday air show & Monday COH

Just a reminder that this Sunday, August 29, Troop 170 will be assisting with the Lake Cumberland Air Show starting at 8:30 am. Then Monday, August 30, we will be having a cookout Court of Honor starting at 6:30 pm. A list of what each Patrol is supposed to bring for the COH, along with more details about each of these events, can be found on the Calendar web page. The calendar has been updated through the the beginning of October.

Eagle Project Workday Aug. 3

All Scouts are invited and encouraged to assist Andrew R. with his Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project from 6 pm to 7:30 pm on Tuesday, August 3. Work will be performed at the Confederate Fortified Camp at Beech Grove in Nancy, which is one of the stops on the Mill Springs Battlefield Tour.

Be advised it will take you approximately 30 minutes to drive to the worksite from Somerset. Take KY 80 west to Nancy, then head south on KY 235. Drive about 6.5 miles and turn right onto Mill Springs Battlefield Road. Drive another 3 miles to worksite on right.

Work to be completed includes dismantling the existing platform and, if time permits, begin construction of the new platform. You may wish to bring a water bottle, gloves, and rain gear.
