Patrols are reminded to be prepared for the Dutch oven dessert cook-off competition at tomorrow’s Troop meeting (August 5). You must bring your own ingredients; Troop will supply charcoal and Dutch ovens. The winning Patrol will receive a prize at the August Court of Honor. Dishes will be judged on creativity, taste, and presentation. Questions should be addressed to your new Patrol Leaders (Michael B., Andrew W. and Drew K.).

No Troop meeting July 29 and other August activity updates
Several very important Troop 170 updates for August meetings:
1. There WILL NOT be a Patrol Leader’s Council (PLC) OR regular Troop meeting on Monday, July 29 because there are too many families who have conflicts and cannot attend.
2. At our next Troop meeting on Monday, August 5, each Patrol should be prepared to cook a Dutch oven dessert. This will be a competition with the winning Patrol receiving a prize at the Court of Honor. Troop will supply charcoal and Dutch ovens. You will be judged on creativity, taste, and presentation.
3. If you plan on attending the Troop’s annual canoe/kayak trip Friday-Sunday, August 23-25, you need to confirm your attendance and pay the $10 food money at the August 5 meeting. There is a lot of planning to ensure we have enough canoes/kayaks as well as transportation. Mr. Loiacono is in charge of arrangements.
4. Please don’t forget that the Troop meeting on Monday, August 12, will begin at 6:30 pm at Fishing Creek Recreation Area where we will have canoe and/or kayak paddling lessons and practice. We will stay out until around dark for anyone wishing to hone their skills. Those that have their own lifejackets are encouraged to bring them.
5. A Cookout Court of Honor will be held on Monday, August 19. This will also begin at 6:30 pm and is intended for the entire family to celebrate Scout recognitions and achievements. A list of what each Patrol should bring will be distributed at the August 5 troop meeting.
6. The Troop’s annual canoe/kayak trip will be Friday-Sunday, August 23-25, on the Green River.
7. The next PLC meeting will be held at 6:15 pm on Monday, August 26. This will be the first meeting for newly-elected Troop youth leadership. All Patrol Leaders will meet with the new SPL & ASPL to plan activities for the coming months. If PLs cannot attend, they should ensure their APLs are there to represent their Patrol.
8. The Troop Calendar has been updated through end of September. You should get in a habit of checking the calendar at least once a week for the latest updates.

The troop will return Sunday, July 21 around 12:30pm. The troop will be sleeping under tarps (there is no need to bring a tent) unless you would like to bring a hammock. If you wish to sign up for the hike and have not done so or have any questions contact Mr. Bullock.

Scout reminder for Saturday June 1
This Saturday, June 1, we are having a merit badge class for Citizenship in the Community. The class will begin at 10 am at East Somerset Baptist Church. Lunch will be provided. Be in class A uniform. We would like to see everyone attend. Thank you.
Service Project time change
The Troop service project to place flags on the graves of veterans and/or perform other service to the Somerset City Cemetery WILL BE HELD STARTING AT 1:00 pm on Tuesday, May 21. Please note this is a change in the previously announced time. Wear your Class A uniform shirt and neckerchief. Ms. Weatherly will be in charge.
Monday’s meeting change reminder
On Monday, April 22, the Troop will be attending the Somerset City Council meeting instead of our regular meeting. Please be at the Somerset City Hall/Energy Center, 306 East Mt. Vernon Street, by 6:45 pm in full uniform (includes neckerchief).
The Council meeting begins at 7:00 pm, so we want to be seated in advance. The Council Chambers are located immediately inside the front entrance.
This meeting is important because it will allow Scouts to complete Communication Merit Badge Requirement 5 and Citizenship in the Community Merit Badge Requirements 3a & 3b. Both of these merit badges are required for Eagle Scout Rank. You will need to bring paper and a pencil/pen to take notes on what is discussed.
You can see specifically what these requirements state by going to the Calendar page on this website, or to the Communication and/or Citizenship in the Community merit badge requirements booklets.
Any questions about the meeting should be directed to Assistant Scoutmaster Jeff Bullock.
