Condolences to family of Tandy Withers; served as T170 Scoutmaster for 12 years

Hobert Tandy Withers III, who helped recharter Troop 170 in the late 1980s and served as its Scoutmaster for 12 years, passed away on November 1, 2022. Born April 3, 1955, Withers was 67 years old.

Funeral services will be held at 1 pm Monday, November 7, at the Pulaski Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Ron Shepherd officiating. Visitation will be held from 11 am until time for services.

Troop 170 was first chartered to St. Mildred Catholic Church in June 1982. Led by Scoutmaster Larry R. Adams, that first unit had 21 registered boys and 6 adult leaders. Bill Massengale assumed the Scoutmaster position in 1983.

From February 1984 to March 1988 the troop was inactive. A desire to provide youth with an opportunity to benefit from Scouting’s core values – leadership, achievement, community, character and the outdoors – led to the troop’s rechartering on March 31, 1988, under Scoutmaster Tandy Withers.

Christian J. Whitchurch, a member of the troop in 1988, became the unit’s first Eagle Scout – the highest rank in Scouting – in 1990. A total of eight other Scouts, including Tandy’s son Jarrod, became Eagle Scouts during Wither’s tenure as Scoutmaster. He continued to serve the Troop for several more years.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests expressions of sympathy to take the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society.
