Condolences to family of Tandy Withers; served as T170 Scoutmaster for 12 years
Hobert Tandy Withers III, who helped recharter Troop 170 in the late 1980s and served as its Scoutmaster for 12 years, passed away on November 1, 2022. Born April 3, 1955, Withers was 67 years old.
Funeral services will be held at 1 pm Monday, November 7, at the Pulaski Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Ron Shepherd officiating. Visitation will be held from 11 am until time for services.
Troop 170 was first chartered to St. Mildred Catholic Church in June 1982. Led by Scoutmaster Larry R. Adams, that first unit had 21 registered boys and 6 adult leaders. Bill Massengale assumed the Scoutmaster position in 1983.
From February 1984 to March 1988 the troop was inactive. A desire to provide youth with an opportunity to benefit from Scouting’s core values – leadership, achievement, community, character and the outdoors – led to the troop’s rechartering on March 31, 1988, under Scoutmaster Tandy Withers.
Christian J. Whitchurch, a member of the troop in 1988, became the unit’s first Eagle Scout – the highest rank in Scouting – in 1990. A total of eight other Scouts, including Tandy’s son Jarrod, became Eagle Scouts during Wither’s tenure as Scoutmaster. He continued to serve the Troop for several more years.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests expressions of sympathy to take the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society.

Troop Physicals set for April 28
Every Scout and registered adult is required to have an annual physical completed on the official BSA Medical Form. Troop 170 will provide free physicals starting at 6 pm on Thursday, April 28, at East Somerset Baptist Church.
Please complete your portion of the forms prior to your arrival. Click here to download the current BSA Medical form. You must also bring a copy of your current immunization record — adults must have had a tetanus shot within the past 10 years — as well as a photo copy of the front and back of your health insurance card.
This is NOT just for those attending summer camp, but is required for all “high adventure” activities such as canoeing, caving, and climbing.
If you are unable to attend, you are still responsible for getting this physical exam and submitting your completed form to the troop as soon as possible.
Registration for Summer Camp
Instead of a regular Troop meeting tonight, January 31, Scouts will have their first opportunity to register for classes for Summer Camp – to be held at Camp Buck Toms (Great Smoky Mountain Council) in Rockwood, Tennessee, the week of June 19-25, 2022. The Patrol Leader Council meeting scheduled for tonight will not take place. Registration will begin starting at 6:30 pm at East Somerset Baptist Church. Mask wearing is recommended while indoors.
Can you hang up a coat?
If you can hang up a coat and smile, they you have all the tools necessary to assist in tonight’s (Thursday, January 20) Somerset-Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce Coat Check Service Project. Please be in the lobby at The Center for Rural Development at 5 pm. Scouts and leaders should wear Class A uniform along with your Troop neckerchief and dress shoes. Show off your merit badges by also wearing your sash. Scouts will help greet guests to the Chamber’s annual banquet and hang up coats. It will be cold tonight, so expect to stay busy! We should be finished about 6:30 pm.
Spider-man movie time changed
Due to a scheduling conflict, the Popcorn Reward movie start time has been changed. Scouts are asked to arrive at Somerset Cinema 8 (100 Mercury Blvd.) at 5:30 pm this Sunday, January 23, to view a showing of “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” Movie begins at 6 pm. There is no cost for Scouts who met their 2021 popcorn sales goal for this reward. Family members are also welcome to attend, but must purchase their own tickets. Scouts should wear Class A uniform and neckerchief.
